Dear State Senator/Representative:

I am writing to you to express my support for the safe practice of medical device reprocessing and my opposition to legislation that would make it more difficult for hospitals to use reprocessed devices. Original equipment manufacturers are using scare tactics to convince legislators that “informed consent,” among other things, should be required when hospitals use reprocessed devices. Regulated by the FDA, however, reprocessed medical devices are safe, help reduce hospital waste and aid in bringing hospital costs down.

The proposed legislation would not increase patient well-being or otherwise have a positive impact on the quality of healthcare delivered by the hospitals of this state. Rather, the proposed legislation is a thinly veiled attempt by original equipment manufacturers to legislate the safe and effective practice of reprocessing out of existence. By driving up health care costs, this legislation will, if passed, have a negative impact on healthcare in our state.

I urge you to oppose this legislation.

Regards,
